In line with the government’s drive against film piracy, agents of the National Bureau of Investigation arrested two men caught inside a Quezon City moviehouse while illegally copying a film being shown last weekend.
NBI Officer-In-Charge Gen. Pedro E. Bulaong identified the suspects as:
1. JERRYDEN CAYLAN BUHISAN , 20, resident of No. 1300 Quezon Avenue, Quezon City, and
2. ARIEL DESUYO DICHOSO , 24, resident of Block 31, Lot 67, Dasma 4 Subd., Cavite.
In a report submitted by the Field Operations Division (FOD) under Head Agent Roland Argabioso, it was disclosed that on June 27, 2008, security officers of ICT Security and Investigation Agency Inc., detailed at SM North Edsa SM Cinema 11, caught two male individuals taking video of the film “Wanted”. On same date, they reported the matter to the NBI who thereafter proceeded to SM Cinema, North Edsa, Quezon City.
NBI agents learned that Buhisan and Dichoso were discreetly using MP4 players as they copied the film “Wanted” during its first showing last June 27, 2008. A review of the contents of their MP4 showed recording/copying of some scenes of the film “Wanted” owned by the Solar Entertainment corporation. ICT Security and Investigation Agency was given a special power of attorney by the Solar Entertainment Corporation in this regard.
Buhisan and Dichoso were asked to show authority or permit to record/copy from the copyright owner of the movie, but they failed to produce any. FOD agents, then, confiscated from them the MP4 and disc used in copying the film. Buhisan presented two identification cards of PNP Civil Security Group with expiry date 09008.
Motion Picture Anti-film Piracy Council Inc., has requested NBI assistance in curbing flicker or camcorder piracy as rampant practice of illegally recording/copying of films has severely affected the local movie industry.
Relatedly last year, the NBI had raided a warehouse with a DVD duplicating machine worth P600 million which was used to manufacture pirated DVD movies.
The suspects were brought before the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office for inquest on charges for violation of Sec. 217.1 in relation to Sec. 177.1 of R.A 8293 (Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines).
